Each of Virginia’s 140 state legislative districts (100 districts in the House of Delegates and 40 in the Senate) was up for election on November 5, 2019. Each chamber flipped from being closely controlled by Republicans to Democratic majorities, cementing “trifecta” control for Democrats for the first time since 1994.
According to current projections, the 2020 session of the Virginia General Assembly will start with a 54-43 (two races are currently too close to call) Democratic seat advantage in the House of Delegates and a 21-19 edge in the Senate.
